David has discovered, not known to he or I before, that the chassis number is stamped on a plate under the bonnet lamp.

On which cars ?
When the VIN numbers were short ( ex: LOOR13034) the chassis numbers were stamped on the right rear side of the traverse ( link ) under the gearbox. When the VIN became with 17 positions, it has been stamped on the right side of the chassis behind the wheel, on the front.
I think the position dépends on the side of the steering wheel too, or I'm wrong?

I've seen full 5 digit VIN on the underside of the bonnet (beneath the bonnet lamp) on 13282, 13302 and 13380 so far.

I've seen quite a few headlamp surrounds with the VIN stamped, just as the last three digits.

On the headlamp cowls and the centre spar (only seen this on 13380), again, it is the last three digits only.

This could be the production marking like the numbers we could find on some pieces of trim...

Don't forget there are for example two different types of bonnet ( US cars bonnets have a quite different curve because of the taller airbox.)
