2012 my Annus horribilis.



230812 Early in Folkestone, happy and ready to go to Salzburg.







After a momentary lapse of concentration.... I am usually obsessively cautious! The damage.



At the halfway stage, Oberwesel (Hotel Schoenburg), I am experiencing overheating & ignition problems. David works on the fans.














240812 We soldier on and reach the hotel near Salzburg but I am still having engine problems. 250812 The car is recovered to Peter Mueller's place in Teisendorf for review of ignition. Peter is Michael von Aretin's engineer.



















100912 Car is recovered by AA/Onetime arriving at David's 120912.




















We assess damage again. A new bumper is required.








Meanwhile David services the car. Radiator is reconditioned. New fans & fan relays. New HT leads, distributor. New set of airconditioning pipes built and installed.






191012 Car at AM WS and the extent of corrosion is exposed.












121212 Car taken back to David's by Konig & more horror is revealed.








110113 Preparation starts.

160113 Dismantled and cut. Oil coolers and carrier trays removed as well.
More or less finalised preparation, apart from final cutting to ensure the new panels fit. The welder now has to make up the new panels as required and come back to start fitting and welding.

Water will get behind the bumper from above. The bumper sits just below the metal lip of the outer front panel. Driving the car in the rain will force water into this gap if it is not properly sealed (and I bet many aren't sealed propery - including both of mine). Once it eats through the outer panel, it will make a start on the inner one, and the sides.

Out of all of the design and construction detail of the Lagonda, I think the front is the worst. It takes the greatest battering from the elements, and yet it is the worst protected. Just above the bumper is the exposed steel edge of the front panel, above this the lamp glasses need sealant to their edges where they fit against a steel surround, and yet must be removed for bulb changes. And above this the bonnet landing panel with another exposed steel edge and a rubber seal on top of it - somewhere else for the water to be forced into. Then the popups with their gaps allowing water to get in to the areas with the ignition and other electrics when the car is standing. Compare this to the V8 with a one-piece aluminium front. Keep your cars out of the wet, or make sure all the front components are all sealed together properly.

On top of this, I think there should have been active air circulation behind the lamp glasses. The P38A Range Rover has this through the headlamp and driving lamps (so when you go wading they drain and clear). I may fit this some day - its just a regulated vacuum feed off the engine.

Roger - at least you will know you have a better car when the work is done -better rust-proofed than it left the factory. It's now a 'restoration' and so you can start your own thread in that forum.
