More changes to note since I looked at 13174, not sure of exact timing of changes yet..
* Glass changed from ??? to Triplex, rear window heater element changed from inside surface (horizontal) to laminated wire filaments (vertical). [between 13174 and 13277]
* fuel flap frame changed to flat from bulbous, chrome release catch revised. [between 13174 and 13277]
Early:
(sorry, no picture of later)
Early catch:
Later catch:
* door step rubber changed style (they are all different on 13174, 13277 and 13379)
13174:
* auto wipe on wash sensor relocated from fusebox side to inner wing [between 13174 and 13277]
Early:
Later:
* exhaust manifold changed - sensor test tubes point up next to rocker covers on 13174, into wheelarch on 13379] Changed when exhaust system changed to single tail pipe?
* Washer bottle level sensor is a float on 13174. Not sure about this one - 13277 and 13379 both have electrodes and I though the change to a float was 13380 onwards.
Electrodes:
Float on 13174:
* also, the rear aircon cars have a different fuel tank:
Rear aircon with cut-out:
No rear aircon:
* Chassis number is on a steel welded-on plate on the right inner wing on 13174, not on 13277 or 13379:
Questions -
* Can anyone help tie down the chassis number changes?
* What was the manufacturer of the earlier glass and when did it change?
* Did the early cars start off with a float washer level sensor? |

I would call this a swage line:
Is this what you mean? This car is 13002. |

I have always considered the swage line to be that along the side of the cars. Up to S4. |

Well, yes. Swageing is a metal forming process, done with a tool like this: http://www.frost.co.uk/frost-deep-throat-swage.html
There is a 'gutter' along the roof where it meets the tops of the doors. It is a 'gutter' because its purpose is to channel the water to the front and rear and stop it from running in through an open window. A swage line is for strengthening and cosmetic purposes.
Anyway, semantics..
My cars have gutters at the edge of the roof above the doors, but it looks like the swage line on the roof was pre-production. Anyone agree / disagree? |

Yes, I agree. This is made more difficult because nobody takes pictures of a car's roof!
I think I see them on 8, 10, 15, 16, 24. Possibly 25, not 27, not 31, not 32. |

18 does have them because I remember it at the Bonhams sale. I'll look through a few more pictures and see what I can find and also ask a few owners if I can. Anything in the parts manual images? |

No mention in the parts catalogue - roof assembly is made up of a front piece and a rear piece, but there is no mention of any change. Only new part codes were when the body was face-lifted. |

Not disputing your numbers but I would say yes to 7, 8, 9, 15, 16 & 18.
I rather like their appearance. Probably discontinued as more difficult to produce or not effective or both. I will take a closer look at pre 30 roofs from now on. |

Ah - vinyl roof.
So, most likely a feature on non-vinyl roof cars up to around 24. I like it too. It reappeared as a feature on the Virage. |

On to something else..
When I recently looked at 13174, I noticed it had different glass to my two cars. 13277 and 13379 both have Triplex glass - Sundym toughened in the sides and Sundym laminated in the front and back screens. The back screen also has the heater element laminated into it in the form of wavy vertical wires (like the heated lamp glasses).
174 had a different manufacturer of glass. I took a picture of the identification on the windscreen, but it is too blurry to read. I think the side windows are a different manufacturer to the front screen, and I am not sure about the rear window. The side windows are made by Soliver:
This looks to be from launch to around 13250-265. It is not too difficult to spot since Soliver put their ID at the top of the glass in the center, and Triplex put theirs at the bottom to the side.
For the front screen, Triplex ID is the left bottom (as you sit in the car) and the mystery other manufacturer is in the bottom right:
Not sure about the rear screen, but 174 has a heating element etched onto the inside of the glass, and made of more conventional horizontal lines.
The front and rear screens appear to have changed earlier - at around 237.
What is the make of the earlier front and rear screens? |

My rear screens read
-007 : xxx triplex sun dim
-057 : Auto last Laminated float G
fronts -007 Triplex
-057 Auto last
Will check 059 tomorrow.
Sides all Soliver (remember our Norwegian friend wrote: Soliver
deny they have ever made glass for AML )
