Hi Folks

I am looking to put new tyres onto my car and there seems to be a considerable choice available in many price ranges but the speed ratings all seem to be quite low. It is my usual policy to put a high specification quality tyre on my cars as these are the only things that are actually in contact with the road.

What is the best tyre that you use on your Lagonda's with regards to make, speed ratings, load ratings, run flat grade etc.

I use the Avon on my car since 2005.
They look fine to me!

Stick to the original specs tyres
Avon Turbosteel CR11B
You get a good deal from camskill.co.uk whether with whitewall or without

Avon Turbosteel CR11B are currently at a low £ 120 ea at camskill.co.uk + £6 p&p for 2 tyres to UK and only £8 p&p for 2 tyres to Europe.

Yes I bought them and they were at GBP 604,00 for 4 tyres including p & p but plus VAT (!).
Good choice!

Relating to tyres, can anyone tell me if filling a tyre with pure Nitrogen gives any real benefits to a car?

I was told that Nitrogen does not fluctuate with temperature and that the molecules are larger than normal air molecules so air loss is much slower "through" the tyre itself. This, therefore, means the tyre remains a lot more stable and hence gives better tyre wear, but would it really make that much difference? I am sure we all check our tyre pressures regularly so I am skeptical to claims of prolonged tyre life.

Also, is not "normal air" made up of about 75% Nitrogen anyway? ?

Lets say 25 % of original volume would "leak away, after that you refill 25 % of tire volume of a 75 % nitrogen.
Personally I say Salesman gossip !
And if a tire does not seal to rim bead those mighty big molecules won't help either.

The benefit to the average motorist is that they don't go down as fast.

The benefit to a classic car owner is that the tyre doesn't contain any oxygen under pressure which will speed up the ageing process of the tyre and so it should last longer before you need to replace it due to the rubber hardening and cracking.

As to whether this is an actual or thoeretical benefit though.. If you fill a tyre with air and the pressure drops over time then there is a higher percentage of larger molecules left. Then keep topping it up and repeating this - you end up with a nitrogen-filled tyre!

Helium is inert. Hydrogen maybe..

I think the benefit, (if any), for the average motorist is negligible.
