Hi Vincent

I need some help in trying to sort out my cruise control system.

My car has a thin grey wire coming up from the prop shaft, up and into the car under the back seat and then through the centre tunnel to the gear shift area. At this end of the wire it has a white plug fitted on it.

What we need to know is what does this plug into. We are guessing that there is another "something" that obviously connects from the gear shift up into the wiring loom for the dash board control but a previous owner has removed whatever it is. The wiring diagrams do not seem to state what the missing part is.

Hello Keith,

A little magnet in a cell has to be fixed on the transmission axle, to make a signal with the plug. I ordered the part at AM, but had no success to make it functionnal on my car ( but the wiring is not yet tested ).
The part is not expensive, more info later about this...

Roos Engineering disconnects the cruise control on every Lagonda they are servicing. They can malfunction and they can cause accidents.
Mr. Roos has experienced and malfunctioning of the cruise control himself, apparently, so he could sue Aston Martin, but I think he does not.

This seems to be a real problem, not like the problem with Toyotas in the USA. ( sorry for that remark )

Does anyone actually have a cruise control system that works on their car?

The ref of the propshaft magnet is : 13.14716; the sensor ( plug ) is 13.14717. ( price in 2007 : 33,41 € each + vat )

The system is working as induction sensor with HALL effect; the system is not working on neither of my cars...

Hi Vincent

Apparently the bits you have suggested I already have installed on my car, which we believe to be the prop shaft end.

What we need to know, please, is what happens at the other end of the wire that comes up FROM prop shaft and currently ends near the gear shift lever inside the car tunnel. Where and / or what does this grey wire with the little white plug on go to / fit into?

How is the connection then made to the wiring loom of the dashboard?

I have read Keith's questions about the cruise control.

The cruise control is the Econocruise system, also as fitted to
many Jaguar cars of the same period.

The speed sensing cable will go to the control module that is
located behind the passenger foot well lower 'A' post trim carpet
and aluminium cover. - At least that is where it is on 13380 and a
couple of others I have seen around that VIN range.

Later cars (not sure when) will dispense with the magnet assembly
and use a speed signal from the speedometer transducer, for
Jaguars, this happened in about 1983 or so but for Lagondas, maybe
not until 1988?

Also input to the module should be a signal generated by a
microswitch telling it that the car is in drive and that the
brakes are off.

I don't recall seeing a microswitch at the gear lever when working
on 1980 car 13049 but maybe it picks up the signal from the
instrument display input for drive.

The brake signal should come from the brake light switch, located
right at the top of the pedal box, maybe accessed from underneath
the dash, otherwise it is instrument pack and fascia top
out...........

There was diagnostic equipment produced by Econocruise to fault
find these systems but they are few and far between these days - I
have one.

A favourite fault on the Jaguar applications is that the end
plates to the bellows fail to seal due to underbody heat and no
vacuum can be generated.

Remove the end plates and seal with a bit of silicon RTV into the
ridge in the bellows.
