|

There is a little contoversy about the exterior difference from S2 to S3.
My opinion that there is no difference in the exterior, but here is another opinion;
http://www.astonmartins.com/v8/lagonda_series_3_fi.htm
So what do you know?

I think we are agreed that side repeaters came in before S3?
I would say that the material difference was the introduction of FI & the 585 engine, but what about the new wheel discs? |

Some say that the side repeaters got smaller and went a little bit backward in S3, but I do not agree, as you see on Sieghard's and Maingard's S3 cars.
However the S3 shooting brake and 13525 have those smaller side repeaters.
I do not think that the wheels are different between S2 and S3, because my S2 and Adrian Peters S2 have the same wheels as Sieghards and Maingards S3.
I would say that there is no possibility to distinguish S2 from S3 at the exterior, but I might be wrong?

The side repeaters on 212 are larger and further forward on the wing. It would seem that on S2 cars the repeaters were specific to the locale the car was delivered in. 212 was originally delivered in Kuwait so it has fog lights on the boot lid. |

I think we are all right. Each car is unique and reflects its country spec. The main S3 criterion was the intro of FI & the 585 engine. |

If I can permit (main characteristics):
S2 untill 13284 gets steel wheels with inox finisher, short front under valence, no rear power windows, short bumpers, knobs on front door panels and sometimes no rear airconditioning.
From 13284, S2 gets "pepperpot" (Ogle Design) alloy wheels, rear power windows, knobs on console, new front spoiler, larger bumpers, and other seats.
S3 gets FI, CRT and Lagonda Badges on fuel panels and boot, a new model of alloy wheels. From 13505, you find VF dash. For the rest, same as later S2.
Sidelights, fog lamps, additional rear lamps under boot and other equipment depends on legal requirements in each country.
Airboxes are different from catalyst ( ASTON MARTIN inscription ) to non catalyst ( no inscription ) on carburetor cars.
I hope I am right saying all this. Please amend me if anyone find this is wrong. _________________ Welcome to Paradise ! (FRONT 242)

I think Roger is right.
Vincent:
"S3 gets FI, CRT and Lagonda Badges on fuel panels and boot, a new model of alloy wheels"
My S2 (13417) has CRT and Lagonda badges on fuel panels and boot. It has also the same wheels as the S3. Same is with the S2 owned by Adrian Peter.
So, no exterior difference which can identify S3 from S2,

Series 2 #13380 was first CRT production car, but it is difficult to be precise about some of the other different features which might vary with country spec, customer choice, AML input, and the passage of time.
Vincent what you say is most interesting. Let us compare cars in Lindau & make a definitive list of differences. |

If I believe my parts catalogue, S3 begins with 13385 and ends with 13539, so 155 S3 cars were made.
Zoran,
Wearing 13417, I think your car is a S3, and not a S2...
more info :
http://lagonda.skynetblogs.be/archive-month/2007-09
see 10/09/2007 in french but you can translate with babelfish tool...
and note that the ASTON MARTIN "VIRAGE" becomes ASTON MARTIN "TURN"...
Babelfish is not expensive -free- but not so good - but surely better than nothing! _________________ Welcome to Paradise ! (FRONT 242)

Ah voila la confusion!
To my knowledge and it is here, too:
http://freespace.virgin.net/roger.ivett/info.html
S3 starts with 13464. The changement from S2 to S3 has ( strangely ) nothing to do with the dashboard but with the engine. Only 76 S3 cars were built.
What do you think Roger?

Ah a schism! AML Parts Manual v AMOC Register.
I tend to follow the Register with S3 starting #13464 & FI.
Shall we argue about it? No.
Vincent, exactly which page & item are you looking at in the Manual? |

I believe the Lagonda 'Series' (1-4) classification was arbitrarily devised by the AMOC to easily differentiate between certain cars within the chassis run & through development of the model. It was not used by AML.
Series 1 (retrospectively) being the 7 ( 12... chassis cars (4 door AMV8)
Series 2 the wedge weber carb cars chassis 13...
Series 3 the wedge FI cars
Series 4 the rounded later cars
Should we keep this classification? |

This is very interesting.
So the company AML never used the S1 to S4 classification? Or did they adopt later the classification of AMOC?
What does Heritage say?
I know that Roos Engineering is using the same classification as you do Roger. And as they are a Heritage member I suppose Heritage does support this classification. So I think we should keep it as a consensus.
There is however one thing to consider as a new idea. With the E-Type Jaguar we have the Series 1,5. So, why not establish this method for the Lagonda, too? Why not call the Lagonda with the CRT dashboard S2,5?
What do you think?
Regards
