A small plaque on top of the engine records the engine builder's name. Missing plaques can be ordered through the AML dealer network for I think about £25.

The engine builder's names are recorded in original engine builder's books held by AML Heritage Operations.

Heritage Operations also hold on computer (for most cars) digital images of what is called the 'Car Record Card' which has brief build details of each car. These sometimes bear interesting annotations. In some cases, a copy of the original 'Warranty Sheet' and/or original 'Certificate of Ownership' (from the front of the service booklet?), are also held with the 'Car Record Card'.

For those wishing to complete the history file of their car it might be possible to obtain such copies by application to AML Heritage Operations/Parts Department, which I understand is located near Milton Keynes.
