1,512 miles. The story….

Nicole & I left home at 3am on Thursday 28th August. M1/M25/M20 and took the Tunnel at about 6am. I had one ignition/dash failure which recovered immediately and we reached our hotel the Chateau De Monthairons near Verdun at lunchtime. A charming traditional French hotel.

We were later joined by Ossi Bashiri, his wife and father for dinner. Ossi was driving a Lotus Excel as his Lagonda is being restored. We had also expected to be joined by Julian & Jane Wharton of Puddleduck Parts but they had an overheating problem with their ’88 V8 Volante so were delayed. Being near Verdun we took the opportunity the next morning to visit the huge Ossuary at a First World War memorial before setting off for Strasbourg.

I had my second ignition/dash failure shortly afterwards but the car started again. Metz/Strasbourg/Ulm about 5 hours with hot sun and many roadworks in Germany. We arrived at our first destination the brand new AM dealership in Memmingen at about 4.30pm and met up with some of the participants.

There had been some Lagonda casualties already the Dufetrelles from France (light problems) Axel Heidemeyer (alarm problems) Martin Roehm (head gasket) & Harry Kielstra (valve problem) so they had left their cars at home and come anyway. Shortly after our arrival we enjoyed a guided tour of a former Carthusian cloister nearby at Buxheim (Roccoco & Baroque),

before travelling on to Lindau via the scenic back roads. The hotel in Lindau was excellent with rooms overlooking the harbour.

We met up with friends old and new. I must say a diverse group of friendly relaxed and unpretentious people. Such is the Wedge fraternity! Friday evening we all enjoyed an informal dinner and drinks at an adjacent terrace restaurant overlooking the harbour.
Saturday we assembled in front of the hotel and then toured the region visiting the Busch Car Museum in Wolfegg

& the St Katharina church (baroque) before having a traditional lunch by a brewery and returning to Lindau in the late afternoon where the cars were put on display on the promenade to much admiration. We were taken to the Hoyerbergschloss

in a 1960’ s bus and enjoyed a formal dinner overlooking the Bodensee. Our visit even coincided with a firework display. There were prizes! Bernard Berkein for most used car (daily driver) Adrian Peter for most surprising car (large tailpipes) and Siem de Jong for most original car. The informal Concours was won by Zoran Mitrovic, Arthur Sutsch & myself. Prizes were sponsored by Puddleduck Parts. Michael von Aretin had produced event T-shirts for all participants. Gregor Mager had produced 1/87 models of each participant’s car. I think I fell into bed about 1.30 am after a last drink in the hotel bar.
Sunday morning 4 cars set off early (9.30) to go to the British Car Show at Mollis airfield in Switzerland about 1.5 hours from Lindau.

This was an incredible event with hundreds of cars including other Astons in hot sunshine in a steep valley. I only wish we could have stayed longer! Ossi & I left and dropped our wives at Zurich airport on the way before progressing to Basle & Strasbourg near where my car failed (dashboard/ignition). I lost a couple of hours while the car was recovered and fiddled with. Eventually we got it started and I drove on to Verdun arriving at the hotel at 10pm where I shared a welcome bottle of bubbles with Ossi.
The monday morning journey to the tunnel & home was uneventful and I got back at 2.30pm with my duff ignition holding out.

It was indeed an excellent event and great thanks are due to the organisers-Sieghard Schneider (who is getting married in 2 weeks!) Michael von Aretin, Falk Schneider, and their team including Gregor Mager (chef & modelmaker) and Richard Vollbrandt (event mechanic).

8 Lagonda cars, but around 35 people!

It does not seem much cars, but nevertheless a breathtaking sight.

The prizes were beautifully made, everyone got a Lagonda-shirt and everyone got a personalised model of his car (!!!!)



But you should have heard the comments of the people in Lindau and in Mollis which admired our cars, here some excerpts:

- „Wow, those are Aston Martins....“

- „Look there, the James Bond car....“

-“Now finally something really special, come park in this special area“

- „This is a L...A....G...una“

- „What a f***ingly beautiful box“

- „The drive in of this incredible Lagonda cars was amazing, congratulations“

In Lindau there were:

3 cars from Switzerland
2 cars from Germany
1 car from Holland
1 car from Belgium
1 car from England

Looking forward for the 2009 meeting in Belgium! Join us!
