As I experienced myself, the chassis number ( VIN ) is stamped at two different places, depending on the lenght of the VIN :
On later cars ( 17 positions ) the VIN is stamped inside the front RH wheel arch above the anti roll bar.
On older cars ( 9 positions ) the VIN is stamped on the LH rear side on the traverse behind the steering rack.
The belgian MoT need to control this, maybe it is asked in other countries too.
