From a new owner:

*After a long search for a Series 4 Lagonda, I am the new, very happy owner of VIN 13557, built in July, 1988. As she has sat with little use for the past few years, I am in the process of attending to lots of deferred maintenance issues, one of which is replacement of the front shocks and tie rod assemblies.

I'm told that many of the suspension bits on these cars came from the Jaguar XJS parts bin. Can anyone tell me if the inner tie rods (described as Tie rod and track rod assembly: part number 24.21345) interchange with a comparable Jaguar part?

Thanks for the assistance.

Can anyone help?
David, Vincent?

The steering rack is different from a XJS ( but I don't know about a XJ S3 ). I'm not sure it could fit. I ordered such parts for my car at AML at affordable prices.
Maybe David could help. (Drawings are in section 4.4 in Lagonda Parts manual).

Xj steering box is also incorrect (located behind front crossbar)
Also the tierod itself is of incorrect length so that isn't useable.

(If I can be of help I have 2 unused second hand inner tierods for spare
pulled from the Zagato Rapide.)

Thanks to all for the responses and to you, Roger, for reposting this request on the Lagondanet forum.

Harry: As long as those inner tie rods from your Zagato are the same as those for the Lagonda, I'd be glad to purchase them from you. Please contact me at choren@msoe.edu and we can work out the details.

As an aside, my wife has caught me sitting in the garage, marveling at the great lines of this beautiful car. Ah, but we must all have our passions...

Hello,

At the front end the following parts are common to Jaguar cars:

Top ball joints

Lower ball joints

Top wishbone bushes

The vertical link, stub axle and wheel bearings are most likely the same but I have not had need to check these yet.

Brake calipers

Brake discs are the same diameter and thickness and pads the same size but material may be different. I have fitted Jaguar OE items to 13380 and they stop very well - discs are £78.00 for the pair, pads are £51.00 from memory. The disc part number is JLM 776 and the pads are JLM 1510.

At the rear end, whilst the brake discs, caliper and handbrake set up looks the same as the Jaguar, it is all different due to the thickness of the vented discs not fitted to the Jaguar. If one is careful in how they do things, if needs be it would be possible to adapt Jaguar components to fit but the discs are unique, I think to the AML set up. There are some vented rear brake disc conversion kits available for Jaguar applications that may (or may not) fit the Lagonda.

The differential is the same casting and 3.07:1 is available as a Jaguar ratio but the propellor shaft companion flange on the diff is smaller for the Jaguar so would need changing.

Some of the hubs are the same as Jaguar items but not all.

David

Great info on the front suspension compatibility David Smile

The parts manual says that from 13380 the front discs were grooved, and when replacing a pair the later grooved ones should be used. I noticed that 13277 has grooved discs (which are pretty new).

The Jaguar JLM776 seems to be without grooves. It looks like you can get a 'performance' version of the Jaguar disc which is grooved and drilled, but I can't see the grooved version anywhere.

As far as I am aware, Jaguar never supplied drilled and/or grooved discs as variants of JLM 776 - other, later models were so catered for but not the range that required the above set up. - There are many non OE versions of these grooved etc, discs available these days and these too could be fitted to the Lagonda if so desired.

The JLM 776 disc and JLM1510 pad were standard fitting across many Jaguar models, including the 335 BHP 6.0L V12 XJR-S which was a very quick car, weighing in at 2 tons or thereabouts.

I took a decision to fit the Jaguar discs to 13380 (which does not weigh that much more than the XJS and is certainly less powerful) and they stop the car very well indeed.

It is a difficult choice whether to fit the costly AML discs or go with the Jaguar ones.

13379 had the same performance and weight as 13380 so, does any one know why AML changed the disc specification?

Generally, grooved discs are used for racing / high performance cars. The grooves help to removed gasses generated by the pads and also stop glazing of the pad surface under highly demanding conditions. My DB9 has grooved discs for example.

I agree with David in that this is not needed most of the time. Unless you are Tim and race your Lagonda from time to time. Very Happy
