Message: any ideas on why, or how to remedy, the situation when one crt (the tach) loses what was years ago called the horizontal hold and flutters? this occurs when the voltage in the car is disrupted by anything being turned on (such as the directional signal!) and then returns to normal. though it has mucked up for extended periods, sometimes returning to normal when voltage has apparently been built up after driving a bit. | |
David Marks 7/01/2003 13:23:01 | RE: crts (again!) | Message: Hello, It may be as simple as the alternator not working to its' design spec but if this were the case, you would expect all screens to be affected. As it is only one screen, it may be that you need to look to the driver system for just that one. The odds are that there are high resistance connections within the cabling connections. Start with the coax cables from the computer to the screen but you would be very lucky for this to be the fault. If you are brave enough, I would suggest removing the Audit computer and stripping out the boards relevant to the tacho screen and cleaning the contatcts. This also would include removing each plug in chip from its' socket, cleaning and replacing. Also, remove the dashboard top and (very carefully) disconnect and clean the multipin connectors to the high voltage boards. It is a nervewracking job, you will need suitable earthing/antistatic equipment for yourself to wear and work on in order to prevent the build up of static that could damge any chips. Any of the above work (apart from the alternator) requires fairly comprehensive strip down, including the main binnacle to access the computer and the dashboard top for access to HV trays. If you try it, hope it works but do tread very carefully! - the HV trays can be dangerous. |
