Message: I just purchased an '89 and had a new smog pump and 2 catalytic converters installed. Now, the cats glow red and no one seems to know how to fix it. A muffler guy says it's burning too rich and the cat is doing its job. My factory authorized repairman says it's NOT burning too rich because it has passed smog,in California no less! While in another state, I think the previous owner had the cats removed. It runs rough now whereas when I test drove it, it ran smooth. Any ideas? Thankyouverymuch! | |

If they are aftermarket units, I suspect that the capacity/flow rate my not be sufficient. This may not be a matter to take lightly as costly head damage may be brewing. |
william morstein 10/13/2002 11:52:25 | RE: Catalytic Conveter glowing red | Message: my understanding is that the cats overheat and thus glow when too much is asked of them (too much unburned petrol, for example). i also understand this will eventually cause the guts to melt and possibly clog the exhaust. |
Barry 10/13/2002 12:26:37 | RE: Catalytic Conveter glowing red | Message: The problem is stemming from the fact that raw fuel is being introduced into the catalytic convertors thereby making them glow red hot. Generally the problem is that the fuel mixture is running way to rich and dumping raw fuel right into the catalytic convertor. If left in this condition long enough your exhaust system will literally melt, either while it catches fire or just prior to it. My suggestion is that you contact Wil de Groot, he has been working on Astons and my Lagonda in particular. Although he is in NJ a telephone call to him is worth its weight in gold. His web-site is: www.exoticars-usa.com and his telephone # 908-996-4889 |

He is checking spark plugs, air mixture, etc..., but I would be VERY interested in hearing from Fritz and others here about how this problem was resolved on their Lagondas! - Thank you! |
